Born in Czech Republic, Helena Cerna moved to the UK in order to pursue her interest in art by studying BA (Hons) Drawing and Applied Arts at the University of the West of England, Bristol. During the study her practice mainly involved drawing and printmaking. Drawing is at the core of her work.
“Over the years of study I have realised how the essence of drawing is important for me. I love the simplicity of this process. Into line I can express my feelings, my passion, myself or entire space. As my pencil marks the paper it is a personal process which transgresses through my hand uninterrupted in the purist form.”
“Inspired by nature and science, where my interest began in quantum mechanics, I have drawn animals and humans deep inside the body while I was imagining the infinity of an atom. However my interest developed to the theory of evolution, my most recent work explores animals on the verge of extinction. At the same time I began printing on glass, an extremely precarious act in itself that relies on delicate balance, an echo to the subject matter of my drawings. I would say my style is deeply intensive, but not to be confused with complicated even though some work is intricate. It is full of emotion, movement and takes its own form as if evolving.”
